I started the first original Murder Mystery dinner company in South Africa in the late 1990s where the game and scripts were exclusively written for a South African audience. I was a journalist armed with a pen, a sense of humour and a love for murder mysteries. Today I am in working in the UK, with an itch to write more murder mystery themes using our distinctive SA humour.
I believe thousands of ex-South Africans must live elsewhere for many different reasons. What a brilliant idea to host your murder mystery party and soak up the nostalgia of SA with some friends.
I send you the instructions online (in an encoded folder) and you follow the instructions and prepare to be thrilled ... to death.
Your guests play the part of typical South African characters and - surprise surprise one of them is a murderer. But hey this is South Africa and a murder docket can go missing and witnesses can "disappear" so you have to be sharp to catch the tsotsis.
This is a lekker opportunity to lighten up and have a laugh! You get the chance to find a murderer in your midst. You can be a baddie or a goodie in these uniquely South African themes. If you manage to outwit the murderer you can get your own back – even if it’s only with a water pistol. In this game everyone is a suspect, there are lots of red herrings and lots of tricky twists in the tale.
All characters, settings and plots are entirely South African and the most important ingredient is – lots of fun!
Our themes are a little bit spicy, a little bit sexy, and a little bit spooky and very complicated – you are going to have to bliksem the suspects to get them to confess (Well that’s optional).
Stereotypes, oddballs and dodgy next-door neighbours are all the characters we use to give the game an edge of authenticity, our characters are a combination of the bizarre and the believable.
You could be acting like a Chatsworth wannabe Bollywood drag queen, or a breeker - wearing your veldskoens and acting aggro like the town rugby hero or being dodgy like the local dagga dealer. It doesn't matter which theme you choose you cannot lose – laughs are guaranteed.
Everyone gets to guess WHODUNNIT and if your little grey cells in the brain are in working order you may get a prize. This is sheer fun and escapism – EISH it’s entertainment to die for!
